Past Fantasy Outlooks
2005
2004
2003
Brazell's power at Triple-A earned him a short promotion to the major leagues, but he struggled when sent back down to the minors. He set a career high in homers with 21 but that came at the expense of his BA and OBP. His inability to get on base (.331 OBA in 2003 and .297 OBA in 2004) and avoid striking out will probably cost him a full-time role in the major leagues. His range at first base is below average, so he has started to take fly balls in the outfield to make himself more valuable, although to date he has not seen any game action there. He might make the team out of spring training as a pinch hitter and back-up first baseman, but the more likely scenario sees him starting the year back in Triple-A with a promotion to the parent club sometime during the year.
Brazell is one of lesser jewels of the Mets farm system but a jewel nonetheless. Brazell continued his steady climb up the ladder by raising his batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging average from 2002 to 2003 but he still needs work on his discipline and eye at the plate as his K:BB and K:AB ratios are still weak. Brazell overcame a bout with Bell's Palsy to earn a promotion to Triple-A at the end of the year and could jump to the majors as early as 2005. Brazell's path at 1B may be blocked by Mike Piazza and Jason Phillips, so the team has experimented with him playing the OF to speed up his ascension to the major leagues.
Brazell hit .308 with six home runs and 19 RBI in 35 games with Double-A Binghamton in 2002. Unfortunately, Brazell had an awful 106/14 K/BB ratio this season, including a horrific 28/1 mark in 131 Double-A plate appearances. With an improved eye, Brazell projects as a viable big league bench bat.
