RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Andy Phillips.

2008

Phillips' window to become a regular major-league contributor is rapidly closing, but he'll get a chance somewhere to earn his keep during spring training and now that he's not competing for at-bats with against a loaded deck in the Bronx. There's a chance that he'll be able to carve out a reserve role somewhere with a good showing this spring, but he'll turn 31 once the season begins so the upside is very limited.

2007

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is looking for a right-handed hitting first baseman, and Phillips has an outside chance of being that guy. The plan is for Jason Giambi to serve primarily as the designated hitter, with Phillips or another acquired option to become the everyday starter at first. If he hopes to crack the everyday lineup, Phillips will have to improve his eye at the plate, after he walked just 15 times in 263 plate apperances (5.7 percent). Consider him a final-round dart at best unless he absolutely tears up opposing pitchers in spring training.

2006

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has said that he sees Phillips spending a good amount of time at first base in 2006, which makes Phillips an interesting sleeper even though he's never done much in the majors. At 29, he's not young but he did bang 22 homers in 300 at-bats in Triple-A. If he has a strong spring, consider him as a reserve pick or $1 endgame play.

2005

Phillips really isn't much of a prospect at 28. He had a strong 2004 at Triple-A Columbus, but any big-league future is as a utility man, and isn't with the Yankees.

2003

Phillips hit .263 with nine homers and 36 RBI in 51 games for Triple-A Columbus after batting .305 at Double-A Norwich with 19 homers and 51 RBI in 2002, but his inability to take a walk and his age (25) make him a long shot to make an impact at the major league level.
