2013
There was no outlook written for Fernando Cabrera.
2008
Cabrera started strongly with the Indians, posting a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings with 18 strikeouts in April, only to fall apart in May. Once again, his nemesis was the gopher ball - he gave up five alone in May and completely shattered the trust of manager Eric Wedge along with his own confidence. A late stint with the Orioles didn't prove to be much better. While acknowledging there isn't necessarily a cause and effect at work here, Cabrera hasn't been the same since getting hurt after the World Baseball Classic.
2007
It was a lost year for Cabrera, who struggled with control for most of the season (32 walks in 60.2 innings) and limped to a 3-3 record with a 5.19 ERA in 2006. His 1.28 WHIP points to some signs of growth in Cabrera's development and if he can harness his control, he will be a valuable option out of the Tribe's pen and could enter into the closer mix at some point.
2006
Cabrera's rise to Cleveland was a little slower than expected, but after earning Triple-A All Star honors, he was finally brought to the big leagues. His first stint lasted just a month, but he showed plenty in that time and later during his September call-up. Cabrera is a large Puerto Rican with a low-90s fastball and a nice splitter. He's also Cleveland's fall-back position should Bob Wickman begin showing his age.
2005
Cabrera, a young Puerto Rican reliever, is ready for a full shot with the Indians. A former starter, he has a good fastball and splitter, has stayed healthy and had a good 2004 in set-up duty at Triple-A Buffalo. Cabrera has a major league career in front of him and is a potential closer. However, he won't save 30 games for Cleveland in 2005. Not many young closers make it to the majors with a splitter as their #2 pitch. Successful ones usually develop it after they have reached the majors.
2004
The 6-4, 170 pounder throws hard and strikes out a lot of people (115 in 109 innings at Double-A). He will be in Cleveland before long, as he fine tunes his breaking pitches. He will be at Triple-A Buffalo for most of 2004.
