The Blue Jays signed Murphy to a minor league contract Friday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Murphy last appeared in the majors in 2009, when he pitched 11.1 innings for the Jays. He's only pitched 17.2 big-league innings in his career, so don't expect much major-league production this year, or any year.

Murphy struggled in his first year in the Toronto organization with a 5.32 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse . One of the perks of being left-handed is that you get to see a large chunk of America until people realize that you're just not cut out to do this for a living. Fortunately for Murphy, he's been able to spend summers in Midland, El Paso, Tucson, Tennessee and Syracuse. It really is as glamorous as it sounds.
Murphy finally made his major league debut with 10 late-season relief appearances in Arizona. Before his promotion, Murphy improved his K/BB mark to 2.37 with a 102:43 K:BB ratio 56 appearances - including nine starts - at Triple-A Tucson. It's possible that he's a late bloomer, but he's experienced a setback with his command after each initial promotion to a higher level. Murphy may get a chance to compete for a spot as a situational-lefty in the Arizona bullpen during spring training, but the rotation seems out of reach.
Murphy was the only member of Team USA to lose a spot on his organization's 40-man roster during Olympic qualifying last fall. No wonder - after a decent start, Murphy fell apart at the Arizona Fall League, posting a 6.26 ERA and .313 BAA in 27.1 IP, despite 36 K. He'll probably start 2006 at Triple-A, but he's not on Arizona's A-list of pitching prospects.
Murphy is a lefty who strikes out a lot of batters, but he allows a ton of base runners as well. He'll probably start 2005 at Triple-A and could get a short call-up, but he's not on Arizona's A-list of pitching prospects.
