2013
There was no outlook written for Jose Capellan.
2008
The Tigers picked up Capellan in a deal with the Brewers in the middle of last season and he was traded to Colorado last fall. He spent a little time in the Detroit bullpen, but command problems and inconsistency with his slider earned him a ticket back to Triple-A. Given that Capellan has a hard time keeping the ball in the yard, pitching half of his games at Coors Field doesn't seem like a great fit. He'll compete for a bullpen job with Colorado this spring. Improved control is going to be necessary if Capellan hopes to stick in the majors.
2007
Capellan is a hard-throwing reliever who shows a lot of promise, but has a hard time keeping the ball down in the strike zone. In 2006 he gave up 11 home runs in 71.2 innings and posted a .62 ground-ball/fly-ball ratio. As long as he continues to give up that many fly balls, he's going to keep getting burned by home runs. There's always a chance that Capellan could fall into the closer's role, but it's a long shot. He'll more likely continue to work in middle relief as a setup man.
2006
Capellan improved with a move to the bullpen halfway through the year at Triple-A Nashville. His 2.96 ERA in 15.2 IP during a September call-up indicates he should be a big part of the bullpen in 2006.
2005
What's not to like about a pitcher who can hit 100 mph on the radar gun and has received glowing praise from Braves manager Bobby Cox and pitching coach Leo Mazzone? After an impressive spring training, Capellan rocketed all the way from Single-A through three levels of the minors to a late-season call-up with the Braves, posting 94 K in 91.3 IP along the way. Despite struggling in a brief trial in the majors, he's someone to grab in keeper leagues and will get a shot as a starter for Milwaukee following the trade for closer Danny Kolb.
2004
Signed by the Braves as a free agent in 1998, the Dominican Republic native missed all of the 2002 season following Tommy John surgery. He spent last season at Class A Rome, where he was 1-2 with a 3.80 ERA in 14 games and 12 starts, but missed several weeks with a strained triceps and an elbow strain. He has been clocked at 100-MPH, so he could move up quickly if given a chance this spring.
