The oft-injured Giarratano underwent shoulder surgery in March 2007 and missed all of last season. The Tigers like his glove but he has had four major surgeries in the past four years leaving him short on the at-bats needed to improve his offensive game. He'll likely begin next season back at Double-A if healthy and there's still a chance he could make it to Detroit in a utility role down the road.
Giarratano managed to play about half a season last year before suffering a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The Tigers like Giarratano's defense and that is something that could earn him a spot as a utility player in a couple of years assuming he loses no range after recovering from the knee injury. He's expected to be healthy for spring training and will likely head back to Double-A to start the year.
Giarratano made an impression on former Detroit manager Alan Trammell last spring with his solid defense and approach at the plate. When injuries struck Carlos Guillen, Giarratano parlayed it into his first major league promotion even though his numbers at Double-A didn't indicate he was ready. Giarratano struggled and was quickly sent back down. He needs at least another full season or two in the minors before the Tigers give him another opportunity.
Giarratano, who has impressive speed and can hit for average, is probably Detroit's second best hitting prospect behind Curtis Granderson. Giarratano was unable to finish the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in August, but is expected to make a full recovery in time for spring training. He should make the leap to Double-A Erie or even Triple-A Toledo sometime this year.
