The Cardinals optioned Cate to Triple-A Memphis before Sunday night's game, the team's official site reports.

ANALYSIS
Cate threw 35 pitches on Saturday night and got hit pretty hard. The Cardinals wanted to add another arm to the bullpen after it got pretty taxed earlier in the week.

After dominating at two levels in 2006 (he had a 1.27 ERA and a 76:19 K:BB ratio in just 56.2 innings), Cate had two cups of coffee with the Cardinals last year, throwing 16 forgettable innings in May, June and July. Unfortunately, he spent most of the year pitching for Triple-A Memphis and he did not come close to repeating his success of 2006. Oakland will bring him to camp as a non-roster invitee, but at 27, Cate is unlikely to make an impact.

After throwing 41 dominating innings in the Florida State League in 2006, Cate was promoted to the Double-A Texas League and only gave up two runs and five hits in 15.2 IP. Cate's 78 K, 19 BB, and 1.27 ERA in 56.2 IP between the two stops opened eyes in the Cardinals organization. He's already 26 and has not worked much as a closer in the minors, but Jason Isringhausen is not getting any younger. Cate may have a shot at the big league closer job by 2008.
