Macri got a brief trial as the right-handed member of a platoon at third base before hurting his calf. He showed decent power at Triple-A with 11 home runs, but may lack the plate discipline to win a regular role in the majors. He'll likely add depth at third base at Triple-A, but it's not hard to see him winning a role in the majors if the Twins have injuries on the left side of the infield.
Macri, who was acquired from the Rockies in a trade for Ramon Ortiz, isn't a top prospect, but could get a shot at playing time in the majors with the Twins' very weak in infield hitting prospects. He hit .296/.345/.511 with 15 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A last season.
Macri played second base, shortstop and third base in 2005 for High-A Modesto and Double-A Tulsa. He batted .283/.381/.443 for Modesto and was limited to one game for Tulsa because of a wrist injury. He'll be back his natural shortstop position in 2006, but may move if fellow shortstop prospects Chris Nelson and Troy Tulowitzki progress.
A fifth-round pick out of Notre Dame, injuries kept him from reaching his full potential in college. Macri has the misfortune of playing behind not one but two highly-regarded prospects at his position (Jeff Baker and Ian Stewart). Those things have a way of working out over the long-term, either in terms of a position change or a trade, provided he hits well enough.
