RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Roberto Novoa.
It's amazing that Novoa had an ERA under 4.50 last year despite modest peripherals and giving up a whopping 15 home runs in just 76 innings. We have to think the home runs were a fluke since he was right around league average in fly-ball rate. He'll take his modest skill set to spring training in the hopes of winning one of the last bullpen spots.
Novoa was the victim of a high hit rate last year, but he struck out more than a batter an inning - a far better K/IP ratio than he showed in the high minors. Novoa needs to keep the walks down to be effective, but with a good spring, he'll be in the Cubs' middle relief mix.
Novoa's 2004 numbers at Double-A Erie didn't translate to success at the major league level, where he was very ineffective in most of his 16 relief appearances. He did finish the season on a positive note, without giving up a run in his last 4.3 IP, and the Tigers are hopeful that he will be able to contribute to the bullpen in 2005.
