RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Cesar Jimenez.

2012

Jimenez returned to the majors last season for the first time since 2008 after missing most of 2009 and 2010 with shoulder injuries. A terrible spring landed Jimenez at Triple-A Tacoma to start the season where he pitched until a September call-up. A 10.27 K/9IP and a 2.31 K/BB at Tacoma were notable, though his 4.44 BB/9IP was notable in the other direction. Jimenez will battle for a middle-relief job this spring.

2009

Jimenez was decent out of the bullpen last year after a mid-season callup. He went through a rough patch in early August in which he allowed seven runs in five outings, but otherwise gave up five runs in 24 relief appearances across 26 innings (1.73 ERA). He started two games, fronting a "starter by committee" system late in the season in which he gave up three hits and one run in 6.2 innings. Jimenez has an excellent changeup, but his fastball only hits the high 80s. He'll likely find himself back in a middle-relief role, though the Mariners have an abundance of his type of bullpen fodder.

2008

Jimenez suffered a stress fracture in his left elbow in March and didn't return until July. He pitched 25.2 relief innings for Triple-A Tacoma, striking out 23 and walking 12. Jimenez needs better control as his high-80s fastball does not intimidate. He could compete for a bullpen spot in spring training, but he looks destined for nothing more than middle relief. A good showing in the Venezuelan Winter League likely will help his cause, though. Through 16 appearances, Jimenez allowed just two earned runs in 19 innings (0.95 ERA) with 11 hits, three walks and 15 strikeouts.

2007

Jimenez looks destined for middle relief even though he started 19 games at Triple-A Tacoma last season. With only a high-80s fastball he needs pinpoint control, which he didn't show last year with 4.61 walks per nine innings. Jimenez could contend for a bullpen spot in spring training if he gets better control, but is a long shot to make the 2007 rotation.

2006

Jimenez earned a promotion to Triple-A Tacoma last season after posting a 2.62 ERA out of the bullpen for Double-A San Antonio. At Tacoma, though, he allowed eight earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. He has potential though as his nine strikeouts to one walk in four Tacoma games attest. His fastball is only high-80s, but it sets up his breaking ball and a good changeup.
