RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Devern Hansack.
Hansack had another season as a serviceable starter for Triple-A Pawtucket while getting a look in Boston during September. He throws strikes and has good command of all pitches, but isn't in the conversation when it comes to a spot in Boston's starting rotation. There may be a need for a long reliever at the major league level, which might suit Hansack, but we expect another season with the PawSox.
Hansack resuscitated his career in Boston's organization, for whom he's made 41 starts in stops at Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket the last two seasons. The 29-year-old throws strikes and has good command of all his pitches. Hansack struck out 131 and walked 40 in 139.2 innings for the PawSox and for the second straight season was called up in September. There are too many starters in his way on the major league roster, but the Red Sox could use some bullpen help and have considered Hansack for that role in the past.
Hansack was a late-season call-up for Boston and made a couple of starts, including a five-inning, rain-shortened shutout of Baltimore. He hadn't been in a major league organization since 2004 (Houston) until he resurfaced with Double-A Portland in 2006 and helped the Sea Dogs win the Eastern League title. Like many of the no-name starters who pitched for Boston in 2006 (Kason Gabbard, David Pauley, Julian Tavarez) Hansack has no chance of making the rotation in April.
