RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Masumi Kuwata.

2007

Kuwata has certainly had an impressive career in Japan, winning league MVP honors in 1994 and the Sawamura Award (Japan's Cy Young) in 1987. However, after going 12-6, 2.22 to win the league ERA title in 2002, he's been ineffective ever since, and he spent most of 2006 in the minors after going down with an ankle injury in April. Out of respect for his past accomplishments, the Yomiuri Giants lobbied many MLB teams in an attempt to give Kuwata a shot at pitching in the majors before he retires. He'll now get that chance with the Pirates, but it would be a huge surprise if he wound up in Pittsburgh's Opening Day rotation.
