2011
Ekstrom spent the 2010 season bouncing back and forth between the Rays and Triple-A Durham, spending more time with the latter. He posted solid numbers at Durham (2.79 ERA, 1.276 WHIP) and didn't look overmatched in limited time with the Rays. He will fight for a middle relief spot in the bullpen and could end up with a seventh-inning setup role.
2010
A non-prospect right-hander, Ekstrom had a fluky half-season at Portland, allowing an extremely low BABIP and HR/FB that drove his low ERA and WHIP. Neither the skills nor the stats support a repeat; Ekstrom's 14 walks and five homers allowed in 28 MLB innings are the best measure of his actual level.
2009
Ekstrom was converted to a reliever midway through last season at Double-A San Antonio and enjoyed some good success, though this did not carry over during a September stint with the big club. However, Ekstrom's 3:1 K:BB ratio after being shifted to the bullpen and his groundball tendencies make him a candidate to make it as a big league reliever/spot starter type, especially in San Diego where they always seem to get the most out of their bullpen.
