Hoffpauir (quadriceps) started at shortstop for Triple-A Tucson on Sunday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hoffpauir has not been healthy since early March, so this is a good sign. The good news is he can get real comfortable where he is, as his double-play partner Sunday, Orlando Hudson (hamstring), should be the one returning to San Diego, not Hoffpauir.

Through more than three seasons at the Triple-A level, Hoffpauir has shown an ability to hit for average, get on base and hit for moderate power. His 2010 numbers at Triple-A Las Vegas as a member of the Blue Jays' organization were nice (.299/.380/.499), but expectations have to be tempered as that's a very hitter-friendly environment. In the offseason, he was claimed off waivers by the Padres, a team with a very poor hitting environment. Should he find significant playing time with them, expect his power numbers to dissipate.
Hoffpauir got 12 at-bats with St. Louis last year, but his time with Triple-A Memphis was more productive, as he added some nice power to his already-strong batting eye. The Blue Jays picked him up in November and may see him as a utility infielder, but he could also compete for the shortstop job if Alex Gonzalez doesn't work out.
Hoffpauir has a nice eye - he has a lifetime .366 on-base percentage and 243:188 BB:K ratio in five minor league seasons. Unfortunately, with a mediocre batting average and no power, Triple-A Memphis may be his ceiling. Hoffpauir may see some time in St. Louis this season as a utility man, but don't expect much.
