Barnes only threw one-third of an inning this spring, allowing one hit and striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Barnes, who posted a 5.59 ERA with Double-A New Hampshire last season, is not fighting for a spot on the Cubs’ roster this season. He will likely spend the majority of the year in Double-A again.

Barnes had a disastrous 2013 campaign, getting tagged for a 7.81 ERA and 1.84 WHIP at Triple-A Columbus, struggling with walks at that level and ultimately having his season cut short by a sprained wrist. At the very least, there is still hope that Barnes might develop into a useful LOOGY, but his success at Columbus in 2012 all came as a starter, as he posted a 67:23 K:BB over 52.0 innings. The Indians' plans for him are uncertain, but all 22 appearances he's made in the big leagues to this point have come in a relief role, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to imagine a scenario where the Tribe give Barnes a look as a starter again.
Barnes bounced around between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus and had enough success (1.26 WHIP, 7.6 K/9 in 16 relief appearances) to enter into the mix for a bullpen spot this spring as the team looks to replace Tony Sipp. It's unclear if the Indians still view him as a starter or reliever as he made just three starts in 31 minor league appearances last season after filling a starting role in each of the two previous seasons. If the Indians still view him as a starter his chances to break camp with the team will take a hit.
Barnes was cobbling together a nice debut season at Triple-A Columbus before a knee injury ended his season in July. The 6-foot-4 lefty has a nice arsenal of secondary pitches to complement his low-90s fastball but struggles with the long ball when his command wavers. He'll be back at Triple-A and could see some time in Cleveland later in the year if he can build on his effort from last season. Considering that he was able to strike out more than a batter per inning (9.20 K/9IP) last season, he should be on the radar of those in deeper formats upon promotion to the big leagues.
Barnes struggled in his first real exposure to Double-A, posting a 5.22 ERA for Akron. He struggled with the long ball (15 homers in 138 innings) and control (58 walks) and has failed to meet expectations since coming over from the Giants. Fortunately, Barnes was one of the better starting pitchers in the Arizona Fall League, where he impressed and posted a 28:7 K:BB without allowing a home run in a hitter-friendly environment while posting a 3.65 ERA over 24.2 innings. He's still just 23 but will need to show more at Double-A before garnering additional attention.
Barnes excelled at High-A San Jose (1.133 WHIP and a 2.85 ERA with 99 K in 98 innings) for the Giants before joining the Cleveland organization in the Michael Aubrey trade. He struggled in a short stint with High-A Kinston but is still a nice mid-grade prospect. He doesn't have lights out stuff so it'll be interesting to see how he handles the transition to Double-A.
