ANALYSIS
Cleveland declined the 28-year-old's $5 million club option for 2021 in October, and he'll head overseas in an attempt to revitalize his career. Santana had 30 homers and an .876 OPS during 2017, but he bottomed out in 2020 with a .584 OPS in 24 games.

Santana signed with Cleveland last offseason, and the team hoped he would provide much-needed pop from the outfield. However, Santana was never able to settle into a groove before being designated for assignment Aug. 31. After passing through waivers, he played at Cleveland's alternate site the rest of the season, and Santana is now headed overseas to play in Nippon Professional Baseball. Curiously, Santana's K% and BB% improved last year, but his average exit velocity fell 3.5 mph. The result was a .157 BA (.209 BABIP). Statcast's expected average was .195, so even 40 points of bad luck wasn't nearly enough to account for the steep decline. Santana's defense has been poor -- his best position is designated hitter -- but don't write off the possibility we see him in affiliated ball again down the road.
