Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
2012
De La Rosa was acquired by the Angels from the Rays in March and was able to work his way to the bullpen of the big club after Robert Coello landed on the disabled list. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, De La Rosa finished the year with a 2.86 ERA while pitching 72.1 innings, ninth most in the American League among relievers. De La Rosa showed a strong skill set in 2013, including his ability to strike out batters (8.1 K/9) and limit the long ball (0.4 HR/9). The hard-throwing righty was so effective for the Halos last season that he was given the opportunity to close in tandem with Ernesto Frieri when Frieri struggled in August, and while he only picked up two saves during that time, he displayed the ability to handle the role admirably. Expect De La Rosa to slide back into his eighth-inning role next season, with an eye on him to potentially be the ninth-inning man if Frieri falters again.
De La Rosa had a strong year as the primary closer in the bullpen at Triple-A Durham. He posted a stellar 2.79 ERA over 54 appearances in which he notched 20 saves. He has struggled a bit with the walks (5.6 BB/9), but also has a knack to strike out hitters (11.6 K/9). De La Rosa earned a brief promotion in April and was a September callup to boost the big league bullpen. With his strong performance at Triple-A, he should be in the competition for one of the last bullpen spots in spring training.
De La Rosa's 10.60 K/9IP at Triple-A Durham led him to seven appearances with the Rays, being used in lower leverage situations. A two-pitch hurler, De La Rosa's mid-90s fastball is complemented with a curve to help keep opposing batters off balance. Look for him to compete for one of the last spots in the bullpen in the spring as it's tough to see him in anything more than a middle relief role.
