Concepcion was released by the Cubs on Friday, Cubs broadcaster Mick Gillispie reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander struggled mightily at the upper levels of the minor leagues throughout his career, and after posting a 5.87 ERA in seven appearances out of Double-A Tennessee's bullpen, the Cubs opted to cut him loose. Concepcion does have three big-league pitching appearances to his credit, but his lack of control and inability to keep runs off the board could make finding a new home fairly difficult.

Friday Lineup Card: Closers Struggle in Openers
April 6, 2012
Carlos Marmol was one of a handful of closers to struggle during Thursday's season openers.
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2013
Concepcion spent all of 2016 in the bullpen, working briefly at Double-A to begin the season, but mostly at Triple-A Iowa outside of three big league appearances. Control was a problem for him in Iowa, as he issued walks at an elevated clip (5.1 BB/9), and his lack of overpowering stuff led him to a mediocre 7.5 K/9. During his three appearances with the Cubs, he flashed a low-90s fastball and curveball while mixing in the occasional changeup. The hype surrounding Concepcion's signing with the Cubs as a teenager in 2012 has faded. Indeed the organization closed the book on the now 25-year-old Concepcion, declining to tender him a contract for 2017. His future is uncertain.
A Cuban defector who was the 2011 Rookie of the Year in the top Cuban professional league, Concepcion didn't fare well in 52.1 Low-A innings last year with 28 strikeouts and 30 walks. He won't turn 21 until February and his low-90s fastball, curveball and changeup, combined with a deceptive delivery from the left side give him some upside. Expect him to repeat Low-A given his struggles there.
