Scruggs signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract Tuesday with the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old Scruggs, who last appeared in affiliated ball in 2016 as a member of the Marlins organization, will remain in the KBO for a second straight season after clubbing 35 home runs and 24 doubles for the Dinos in 2017. The first baseman had a strong track record of production for much of his time in the minors, but his poor numbers during cups of coffee with the Cardinals and Marlins from 2014 through 2016 would have likely relegated him to signing a minor-league deal had he headed back stateside. He'll see if another banner campaign in the KBO will be enough to generate more serious MLB interest next winter.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Scruggs was a regular for the Cardinals' Triple-A Memphis affiliate in 2015, splitting time between first base and the outfield. He did get into 17 games for the Cardinals, starting just 10 and totaling 42 at-bats. Scruggs has struggled in very limited time at the MLB level to get on base at the same rate he does in the minors. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter will likely continue to serve as organizational depth at the Triple-A level after signing with Miami in the offseason.
When Allen Craig was shipped to Boston at the deadline, the Cardinals were left with little depth behind starting first baseman Matt Adams. Scruggs was summoned for his first taste of MLB action in September, logging 15 at-bats at age 27. Scruggs hit .286/.370/.494 with 21 home runs and 87 RBI across 472 at bats for Triple-A Memphis, a performance that will give him a shot to win a bench role this spring. With how well he hits southpaws, Scruggs could earn some NL-only value if he can get regular starts against lefties in 2015, though his chances of doing so took a major hit when the team signed Mark Reynolds in December.
