ANALYSIS
After being released by the Rockies in mid-March, Asher pitched in the independent Atlantic League during the 2019 season. The right-hander spent most of 2018 with Triple-A Columbus, where he recorded a 6.05 ERA and 1.60 WHIP with a 49:36 K:BB across 16 starts. Asher will have the opportunity to work with the big-league coaching staff before likely returning to the minors until potentially earning another shot with the Twins' bullpen.

Asher missed a significant amount of playing time due to injury and suspension last season. He suffered a shin fracture in late May at Triple-A Lehigh Valley which cost him a month of action and then was suspended 80 games for using a testosterone-related performance enhancing drug. He returned from suspension in time to be a September callup and went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA in five starts for the Phillies. Asher credited his success to development of a two-seam fastball, which he used for the first time last season. He used the pitch frequently, throwing it more than twice as often as his cutter while holding batters to a .191 average on the pitch. Asher isn't going to generate a lot of strikeouts as a sinkerball pitcher, but if he can continue to command that pitch, he could carve out a successful career as a back-end starter in the majors. The Phillies will give him a shot to earn a rotation spot this spring.
The Phillies acquired Asher from the Rangers as part of the return in the Cole Hamels deal. Asher spent most of the year at Double-A and Triple-A before receiving a promotion to the majors at the end of August. His first taste of the majors was not great, as Asher went 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts. He had some bad luck (.341 BABIP and 50% strand rate), but he was homer prone and also saw his strikeout rate drop from 7.6 K/9 with the Phillies Triple-A affiliate to 5.0 in the majors. Given his mediocre fastball, Asher's upside is probably as a back-of-the-rotation starter. He will likely begin the year back at Triple-A, but should get an opportunity to pitch in the majors again later on in the season.
