Tyler Wilson

After spending the last half of 2014 at Triple-A, Wilson spent the first half of 2015 at the same level before the Orioles called him up when injuries devastated the big league rotation. Wilson held his own and turned in quality performances in three of his five MLB starts. However, he had middling strikeout rates both in the majors and at Triple-A. Despite pitching to contact, Wilson allowed only one home run in 36 innings with the Orioles thanks to a 52 percent groundball rate. Wilson has to make some adjustments, but he has four pitches and may have an outside chance at a rotation spot or perhaps the swingman role in spring training.

It's easy to get lost in the shuffle in an organization with pitching prospects the likes of Dylan Bundy, Hunter Harvey and Tim Berry, but Wilson has been quietly making a name for himself over the past year and a half. The right-hander enjoyed success at Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk as a 24-year-old in 2014, finishing with a combined 14 wins and 157 strikeouts, both tops among Orioles minor leaguers. Thus, it was only fitting that he received the club's Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors. His ERA, WHIP and strikeout percentage all improved with the move up to Norfolk in early July, making the relatively modest bump in his walk rate acceptable (from 2.0 BB/9 to 2.7 BB/9). Wilson figures open 2015 back at Norfolk, but he is now on the Orioles' 40-man roster and will be on the short list of spot-start/injury-replacement candidates during the season.
