Moroff (shoulder) was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Moroff missed the last four months of the season after undergoing surgery on his dislocated left shoulder, and the Cardinals have now removed him from the 40-man roster. The 28-year-old appeared in only 13 games between the majors and Triple-A in 2021 and should be healthy in time for spring training.

Moroff was traded to Cleveland this winter as part of a minor deal. Moroff has had just over 200 plate appearances at the big-league level with very little production to show for it. He is accepting of his walks, but has struck out in one-third of his plate appearances in the major leagues. He had a high strikeout rate in the minors as well, but offset it with a high walk rate in Triple-A the past three seasons. He has some pop and some speed, but the chances of him becoming another Max Muncy are infinitesimal. He is out of minor-league options, so he will likely make the Opening Day roster, but Moroff is only draftable in the endgame of single-league formats that use on-base percentage over batting average.
2017 was an interesting season for Moroff. The 24-year-old shuttled between Triple-A Indianapolis and the majors all season, which wasn't overly surprising. However, in just 51 games at Triple-A, the switch-hitter bashed a career-high 13 home runs en route to a .909 OPS and .265 ISO. Those power numbers didn't translate to Pittsburgh, but the patience came with him to the big leagues (11.4 percent walk rate). Unfortunately, so did the strikeouts (30.7 percent). His defensive versatility helps, but with better options at each infield position, Moroff's ceiling doesn't appear to be much higher in 2018. He seems to be entrenched in a utility role for the foreseeable future unless he can learn to make contact more consistently.
Moroff made his major league debut in 2016, striking out twice as a pinch hitter. The 23-year-old switch hitter played nearly the entire season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he hit .230/.367/.349 in 520 plate appearances. He led the International League with 90 walks, but the batting average dip from .293 to .230 is troubling. Moroff has the ability to play second base, shortstop or third base, but he's behind Adam Frazier on the depth chart. He's never hit more than eight homers in the minors and he's not the most successful base thief -- he's swiped 62 bases in 108 career attempts -- but the Pirates are only grooming him for a potential utility role with a low ceiling.
Moroff landed on Pittsburgh’s prospect radar in 2015, compiling a slash line of .293/.374/.409 with seven homers and 51 RBI for Double-A Altoona. He played primarily second base, a potential area of need with the departure of keystone incumbent Neil Walker. Named the Pirates’ minor league player of the year, Moroff will likely start the season at Altoona with a potential midseason promotion to Triple-A Indy. The infielder batted .233 and .244 in 2013 and 2014, respectively, so fantasy owners will need to first make sure 2015 wasn’t an outlier season.
