Alomar Jr. is planning on retiring, the Mets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
He wasn't projected to be more than a third catcher in most situations anyways, so the 41-year-old will retire after spending 19 seasons in the majors.

Alomar was slowed by back spasms and the fact that he was the personal catcher for a faltering Odalis Perez while with the Dodgers. So when Perez failed and the Dodgers wanted to bring up Russell Martin, Alomar was dealt to Chicago. He still has some pop in his bat and can call a decent game, helping Mark Buehrle at points in August, but is just hanging on as a veteran backup. He might be getting too old for that job.
Alomar served two roles in 2006, neither particulary useful: Caddy for Rod Barajas and blocker for Gerald Laird. He'll now back up Dioner Navarro in Los Angeles, but we don't expect much.
With no young catchers in the system left to groom, Alomar's work was clearly done in Chicago, so he'll pack up his veteran wisdom and ominously creaking limbs and head down Texas way. This time though, instead of caddying for a youngster he'll be blocking one, bumping Gerald Laird down to Triple-A -- a situation that should be as temporary as Alomar's stints off the DL.
Alomar will return to the White Sox in 2004 to impart whatever veteran wisdom he forgot to pass on to Miguel Olivo last year. He certainly isn't back for his bat (.281 OBP in '03).
Back for another round with the White Sox, this time "tutoring" Miguel Olivo and Josh Paul. His injury-risk effectively eliminates any roto potential.
