Past Fantasy Outlooks
2005
2004
2003
Announced his retirement, March 2005.
Bautista was basically handed the starting job in right field for Arizona at the start of 2003, and, when he wasn't hurt (hamstring), he was so ineffective that the D-Backs were forced to rent Raul Mondesi for the stretch drive. When he was in the lineup, Bautista hit .275-4-36 with a .724 OPS (140 points down from 2002) in 305 plate appearances. Bautista turns 32 in 2004, and now appears to be past his peak; Luis Terrero and/or Josh Kroeger may be competing for Bautista's playing time in right field for Arizona this spring.
If you take Bautista's last three seasons with Arizona and collapse them into one injury-free, plays-every-day season, you get numbers like .313-14-70. He's reportedly fully recovered from the torn labrum that ended his season last May, and he'll walk into the starting job at right field for the D-Backs when spring training starts. Bautista may be off many people's fantasy radar screens because of his long injury layoff last year. His career numbers indicate that he shouldn't go high among NL corner outfielders, but if he's available late, he'll be a great value play. Just keep reminding your league-mates on draft day what a great job Quinton McCracken did in right field for Arizona last year.
