After batting .277/.311/.339 in 112 at-bats for the Dodgers, Castro signed a one-year deal with the Phillies. He'll once again be a defensive substitute and thus will have limited fantasy value.
After the Reds waived Castro, Baltimore gave him the starting shortstop job, because the Orioles simply didn't have anyone else. Castro is 36 and a career .228 hitter. The Dodgers gave him a minor league deal in January, but he offers no offensive value.
Castro hit even worse last year than he customarily does, and then suffered a major elbow injury. A good litmus test of how much Dusty Baker has changed his veteran-loving ways will be how many times he pencils Castro's name into the lineup, especially if it's in favor of Edwin Encarnacion at third base.
Say what you will about the Reds giving Alex Gonzalez a three-year deal to be their shortstop (and you can say plenty), but at least it prevents them from starting Castro every day out there. Castro's glovework remains superb, but he brings almost nothing to the table offensively -- not even stolen bases to lessen the impact of his complete lack of power.
Castro again showed great defense at third base and shortstop, but couldn't hit well enough to keep a starting job with the Twins when given the opportunity. With the trade for Luis Castillo and Jason Bartlett more secure in the starting shortstop job, Castro will likely see fewer at bats this season in a utility role.
Ironically, Castro signed a two-year deal with the Twins in the year in which the Reds finally cut Barry Larkin loose. He'll compete for the starting shortstop job with Nick Punto and Jason Bartlett. He still fits the prototype of all-glove no-bat, despite some improvements at the plate.
What best summarizes the Reds' current futility? That Juan Castro had 348 plate appearances for them in 2003? That he is going to be seriously considered for a starting job in the infield in 2004? Or that he might actually be better than a couple of their other alternatives?
Believe it or not, Castro is signed through the 2004 season. The Reds signed Castro to a two-year contract extension in May of 2000 and extended that contract another two years in May of 2001. All this for a player whose offensive upside is Rey Ordonez. Remember Castro's contract when the Reds cry poor.
