Sandwiched between the BALCO allegations and a season-ending hand injury was another decent offensive season for the 19-year veteran. He’ll turn 40 just prior to the start of the 2005 season and will split time with Humberto Cota behind the plate after being traded to Pittsburgh. He'll be a major injury risk once again.
Santiago put up pretty good numbers for a catcher while playing in Pac Bell Park. With the move to Kauffman Stadium-a great hitters' park the last five years--and the loss of two good catchers from the AL, he stands to be one of the better fantasy pickups in the league.
Santiago was one of the feel-good comeback stories of 2002, going .278-16-74 at the age of 37. Be warned, however, that the chances of Santiago repeating or bettering that performance at the age of 38 are close to nil. Dusty Baker was one of Santiago's biggest fans; Felipe Alou, however, may well be inclined to see what Yorvit Torrealba can do with more playing time. Bank on reduced at-bats unless Torrealba gets hurt or bombs, which will lead to decreased fantasy value, even if he maintains his amazing 2002 level of effectiveness.
