A broken leg Stynes sustained in spring training might be an indication from a divine being that it's not going to work out for him as a major leaguer anymore. At best, he might make it as a utility man in 2006.
Stynes was starting to make a nice little niche as a pinch-hitter and spot starter the last few seasons, and was fortunate enough to land in Colorado where the middle of the infield was a total mess. He logged almost 450 at-bats and hit the ball well enough to earn at least that many in '04. Stynes, who was second to Florida's Mike Lowell in fielding percentage among NL third basemen, will begin the season as the Bucs' starter at third.
Stynes signed with the Rockies in January and might stumble into at least a part-time starting role at third base.
