Embree appeared in just 36 games last season for Colorado before suffering a broken leg and undergoing surgery. The club declined its option on Embree for 2010, so he will look for work somewhere where he can contribute with his veteran leadership. Suffice it to say, his best years are behind him, and there is virtually no chance he will get save opportunities this season, no matter where he lands.
Embree's control has started to slip, and it's starting to show up in his numbers. After the A's declined his option, Embree was scooped up by the Rockies to serve as a left-handed set-up man in front of new closer Huston Street or Manny Corpas. In any case, his value is becoming very limited as a staff filler.
Embree managed to pick up 17 saves with injuries sidelining both Huston Street and Justin Duchscherer for prolonged periods. He'll likely command a few extra auction bucks in 2008 as a result, but he should go back to being an effective left-handed set-up reliever. Be careful not to pay a bunch for last year's saves.
Embree embodies the "have left arm, will travel" adage. The 36-year-old tied for the Padres lead with 73 appearances in 2006 and struck out an impressive 53 batters in 52.1 IP. Embree will serve as a solid situational lefty after signing with Oakland.
After coming over from the Red Sox, Embree quickly drew the ire of Yankees fans by failing in almost every situation. He finally lost his job as lefty specialist to Al Leiter. He won't wear a Yankee uniform again this year, but lefties can usually find a job somewhere.
Embree pitched in 71 games last season -- the most of any season in his career -- and will be an important member of the team's late inning relief corps. His strikeout rate has dropped in each of the last two years and he'll be 35 when the season begins. He may be in decline, but still has value if your league values set-up men or uses Holds as a category.
Embree never materialized into a closer, but became a solid left-handed setup man along the way and will continue in that role for Boston in 2004.
Embree, 33, will be the club's first choice to close games, but it's likely there will be a few relievers getting save opportunities depending on the situation. He finished the season with a 2.03 ERA and two saves in 68 relief appearances. In 62 IP, he struck out 81 and allowed only 47 hits (.207 BAA). His numbers indicate he can handle the closer's role.
