Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
After a very solid season with the Mets in 2002, Guthrie struggled a bit with the Cubs a year ago. His ERA was a cosmetically pleasing 2.74, but for a left-handed middle-relief specialist that had 22 more appearances than inning pitched, ERA isn't a very reliable indicator. The Padres showed some interest in Guthrie last November, and if he were to play in that pitcher's paradise, he could bounce back a little bit.
Despite a terrific 2002, when he went 5-3 with a 2.44 ERA out of the bullpen, the Mets let him walk via free agency, choosing instead to sign Mike Stanton. If you're looking for some slop wins with decent numbers, Guthrie's your man. One note of caution – his career ERA is 4.11, so regressing to the mean could be expected, particularly if he signs for a team that plays in a park that isn't so forgiving.
