The Pirates released Roa, a non-roster invitee, on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Roa, who missed most of last season due to shoulder surgery, reported to minicamp last month 40 pounds lighter than his prior playing weight and declared his arm healthy. He was a long-shot to make the Bucs and now the trimmed-down pitcher will have to try to latch on with another organization.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
The right-hander ended the 2003 season with the Padres, but also spent time with the Rockies and Phillies as well. Each stop was unremarkable and he ended the season with 28 total appearances and an ERA in excess of six. He signed a minor league deal with the Twins, a team desperate enough for arms they might find him mop up work, but he doesn't have the stuff or the command to warrant anything else.
Roa was the ultimate bargain. He started the season as roster filler for Triple-A Scranton then went 14-0 and was called up to the major leagues. He actually pitched better than Brett Myers while with the Phillies, but is nine years older and doesn't get paid as much. He will compete for the last spot in the rotation based on his performance in 2002. Doesn't walk many (13 in 71.1 IP), but hitters connected for a .286 average. He averaged six innings per start. He might provide a nice bargain in 2003. However, since the Phillies haven't invested too much in him, neither should you.
