White announced his retirement on Friday. He gave up two runs in one inning in his spring debut with the Twins on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
With White out of the picture, Dennys Reyes and Darrell May will compete for a spot in the bullpen as the situational lefty. It's still possible that the Twins may go without a lefty in the bullpen or even use Francisco Liriano in that role to start the season.

It's been three years since White has been effective in the major leagues, but he'll try to win a job as a lefty-specialist in the Minnesota bullpen.
The failure of White and Felix Heredia to get lefties out caused considerable angst among the Yankee faithful last year. White was marginally better after returning to the Reds, but his 12 homers allowed canceled out the value of his 33/5 K/BB ratio. Despite his poor overall numbers last season, his control may be enough for Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone to work some magic in a setup role.
White accepted the Yankees' arbitration offer in December and will be the number two lefty in the pen, behind Felix Heredia.
In two of the last three seasons, White has turned in superlative efforts. The other season was a Coors Field-induced extended gopher ball session. When making a projection for White this year, take heed not to use three-year averaging as your model. White is a free agent after the 2003 season – Mike Remlinger's new deal should serve as a nice benchmark for White's agent.
