Odalis Perez: Released by the Nats

Perez was released by the Nats on Monday after he continued to no-show at training camp, the Nationals' official site reports.

ANALYSIS
This was a pretty strange story - Perez gave his agent authority to agree on the $850,000 non-guaranteed minor league deal, but then expressed his discontent with the deal, because it wasn't a major league deal. Before we beat up on Perez too readily, consider that as far as we know, it's possible that something got lost in the translation between Perez, his agent and the Nats. It's still possible that he acted out of line, maybe even probable, but it's also yet another bullet point in the awful spring training storyline for the Nats.

Perez was very hittable in 2008 and barely managed to average five innings per start, but he probably did enough to salvage his career and earn a contract from somebody desperate for rotation help. Just make sure that in your fantasy league, that someone isn't you.

Perez’s 2007 season was cut short in August by a knee injury, which was a fizzle to a career-worst season. His K:BB ratio was the lowest of his career (64:50), and his 1.660 WHIP was also a career-worst. The Royals decided to not pick up their club option for 2008, so he will seek employment from a team in need of a mediocre left-hander.

Rumors of a poor relationship with the Dodgers began surfacing in 2004. Two years later, it hit rock bottom with Perez relegated to the back of the bullpen. A trade to the Royals, who also play in a pitcher-friendly park, was a nice match. He wasn't great in Kansas City, but he showed glimpses (6 IP, 10 K Sept. 8 against Boston). The Royals hope the new season on this new team brings out the Perez who was an All Star in 2002.

The Dodgers shopped Perez around all winter with little success, both with the old front office and the current regime. Trips to the DL for shoulder soreness and an oblique injury limited him to 19 starts in 2005, also limiting his trade value in the offseason. Nearly all of his indicators are negative right now, including a road ERA that's 2.68 runs higher than at home. If he ever gets shipped out of Dodger Stadium to a neutral or hitters park, look out.

Perez's has had low win totals for someone who has been so effective, so he'll be somewhat undervalued and a great fantasy pick. At 26, he's young enough to keep improving and pitching in Dodger Stadium always helps.

Perez actually pitched well in 2003 if you remove his four worst outings - his ERA drops from 4.52 to 3.24 by removing those starts. Of course, you can perform that sort of exercise with most pitchers to glean some sort of silver lining. It's rumored that he has fallen out of favor with the team and may be traded to a less pitcher-friendly environment. If a trade comes to fruition, be wary of him - his ERA was 2.73 at home (with 56 hits allowed in 69.1 innings), and 5.59 on the road (with 135 hits allowed over 116 innings).

After elbow surgery cost him his 2001 season, he was traded prior to last year with Brian Jordan for Sheffield. His emergence in 2002 made this one of the more intriguing off season deals. A small frame lefty with a big fastball and wicked curve, he learned how to keep his pitches down and became downright nasty in 2002. Rocketed out of the gate with first half numbers of 0.90 WHIP and 2.81 ERA. Awfully stingy with his walks, giving up only 38 in 222 innings. The key here is the 222 innings, an awful lot for a 24-year old.
