Signs minor league deal with Orioles

Ohka signed a minor league deal with the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASN reports.

ANALYSIS
Ohka hasn't pitched in the majors since 2009 with the Indians, but he has since added a knuckleball. The 40-year-old last pitched stateside in the independent Atlantic League in 2014. Making the majors wouldn't be unheard of for the veteran, but it would certainly make for a unique story.

Ohka hurt his shoulder midway through the 2006 season and while he did recover enough to return, he didn't pitch very well. The fact that the Brewers did not offer him arbitration should be a good sign they don't think his shoulder is in very good shape. Some team will take a chance and sign him to a contract this winter.

Ohka was inconsistent in 2005, but pitched well enough that he's a frontrunner for the fifth starter spot in the Milwaukee rotation this spring. His K/BB rate improved dramatically after his trade to the Brewers, so maybe pitching coach Mike Maddux is having an impact.

A Carlos Beltran line drive off his forearm cut short what would likely have been a third straight solidly unspectacular year for Ohka. He's miscast as a #2 or #3 starter, but he's not likely to embarrass himself in the role either.

Ohka put together an entirely adequate year in 2003 -- his ERA was a full run higher than the year before, but only because his good luck with hits allowed turned for the worse. He's developed into a servicable back-of-the-rotation starter, and there's no reason to think he'll be any less in 2004.

Steady as a rock pretty much all year, while the other higher touted arms faltered. Not a threat to win a Cy Young, but will provide solid innings as a No. 3 or No. 4 starter for a few years to come.
