As expected, Everett was a valuable defensive player for the Tigers in 2009, but he once again failed to make an impact with his bat. The 33-year-old shortstop hit just .238/.288/.325 in 345 at-bats. He'll return as Detroit's starting shortstop, but his lack of hitting will continue to limit most of his fantasy value and could eventually start to cost him at-bats.
Minnesota signed Everett with hopes that his Gold Glove-caliber fielding would more than offset his weak bat, but a shoulder injury early in the season limited his ability to throw and he was reduced to a utility role. He will be the Tigers' starting shortstop, but his bat will keep him from being an option in all but the deepest leagues.
Everett was limited to 66 games last season due to a fractured fibula. He delivered his usual excellent defense accompanied by an anemic bat, a routine we've come to expect of Everett. Let go last fall by the Astros, he signed with the Twins to become Minnesota's starting shortstop. His leg should be healthy by spring training, but his new surroundings won't bring an improvement at the plate.
Everett had a decent offensive year last year, but his value is in his stellar glove. He will continue to be one of the better fielding shortstops in the National League, but has minimal fantasy value.
He's more glove than bat, but Everett was one of six MLB shortstops to post double figures in steals and homers. That makes him a good fantasy option if you spend your money or high picks elsewhere. His BA and OBP are anchors, so adjust accordingly.
Everett's season was derailed by a left wrist injury in Aug 2004, sidelining him for most of the remainder of the season. Everett was beginning to show more offensive punch before the injury, recording five home runs and five steals in July. Manager Phil Garner could elect to run Everett more this upcoming season, making 20-25 stolen bases certainly a possibility. If healthy, he'll start every day at shortstop.
Everett's spot in the starting lineup wasn't assured by his bat, though he held his own in that regard. Instead, it's his steady work with the glove that will keep him on the field. Everett led all major league qualifiers at shortstop in range factor in 2003, with a 4.94 rating.
Everett's window to win a permanent major league job is starting to close. His superior glove work has given him the chance in the first place, but his inability to hit for power or average has kept him out of the lineup.
