Henson was put on waivers by the Yankees after he agreed to terminate his contract. He gave up the $12 million remaining on the $17-million, six-year deal he agreed to in 2001 in order to play football, the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
If he isn't claimed by a team by Monday, he'll be a free agent. It's unlikely any team will claim him with so much money due to him on his contract if claimed and the fact he's said he's going to play in the NFL.

Observers no longer whisper their speculation whether Henson would be better off playing football. It's now an outspoken belief, following a second consecutive disappointing season at Triple-A Columbus. Henson's batting eye hasn't improved, and his power has declined. His lack of development is what prompted the Yankees to trade for Aaron Boone.
Henson hit .240 with 37 walks and 157 strikeouts and committed 35 errors in 128 games at Triple-A last season and then followed that up with a poor showing in the Arizona Fall League. Henson did have 18 home runs, 30 doubles and four triples in 471 at-bats for the Clippers, but until his plate discipline and his defense improve, he's nowhere near ready to play in the major leagues. Recognizing that, the Yankees re-signed Robin Ventura to play third base this season, so we don't expect to see Henson in the Bronx until September.
