Ginter accepted a minor league assignment in some 40-man roster maneuvering in order to keep his current contract, which calls for him to make $1.06 million in 2006. Last year was a wasted season behind Mark Ellis, and 2006 doesn't figure to provide much more opportunity as long as Ellis produces.
Ginter will battle Mark Ellis this spring for the starting second base job in Oakland after being traded from Milwaukee. Ginter showed good power last season and has the plate discipline the A's love, but he'll have to field well to keep the job.
Ginter took over for Eric Young as the everyday second baseman midway through the season and proved he can play on a regular basis. He doesn't hit for a high average but he gets on base and showed a little power as well. He's most likely just keeping the position warm for a season until Rickie Weeks arrives, but if he plays everyday he will be a definite sleeper pick.
The Brewers acquired Ginter in a late season trade during 2002 and gave him a chance to play 3B everyday. He showed good plate discipline (.374 OBP in 28 games) but that didn't translate into production. The Brewers will probably give him another shot at the 3B job during spring training, but he will have to earn a spot on the roster.
