Wilkerson's been passed around like the Old Maid card lately as he'll likely be with his fourth organization in two years when the season starts after filing for free agency during the winter. He struggled in stops with both Seattle and Toronto, but Wilkerson can still draw a walk and flashes moderate power (apart from last year) to be useful off someone's bench or in a platoon role. Fantasy owners should stay away, since his batting average will hurt you in a full-time role. Look to see where he lands this winter before writing him off completely.
Wilkerson had another disappointing season, hitting just .234/.319/.467 in 338 at-bats. He can still draw a walk and hit for moderate power, but he'll be another year removed from his promising 2004 season. He wasn't offered arbitration by Texas, and will likely be playing elsewhere in 2008.
Wilkerson's season was cut short in August due to a shoulder surgery that required surgery, but he was never healthy all season and regretted not getting the shoulder taken care of last winter. He showed some flashes of his old self, including a .293/.414/.598 line in May, and there's a good chance Texas will offer him arbitration and bring him back for another year. Wilkerson can play center field, but with the signing of Kenny Lofton likely will share time in left field and in the designated hitter role with Frank Catalanotto. There's some upside, especially in leagues that count OBP as a scoring category.
Wilkerson wasn't quite at 100% for most of 2005, and as a result saw his numbers tumble across the board. That was all the excuse Jim Bowden needed to send him packing. Now in Texas, with a better ballpark to hit in and better hitters around him in the batting order, Wilkerson could be set to explode.
Wilkerson broke through big-time in the power department, racking up over 70 extra base hits and a career high in SLG. He's just entering his prime, so the best may be yet to come -- Ray Lankford with half the steals and better health is perhaps the obvious comparison.
Wilkerson's 2003 was a carbon copy of his 2002, but he's still got time to take it to the next level. For the Vlad-less Expos' sake, he better do it in 2004.
Finally broke through in 2002, and he's still young enough to improve his numbers. Watch for fewer strikeouts this year, though the power spike might not arrive until 2004.
