January 16, 2012
Beltran has signed a minor league deal with Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
He's organizational depth at this point, and considering that he'll turn 32, there's really not much to get excited about even if the Orioles give him innings out of their bullpen.

Beltran missed 2005 due to Tommy John surgery, but given that he's never been able to turn his fastball into outs above Triple-A the Nationals likely weren't missing much. If he's fully recovered, he'll fight for a middle relief spot in the spring.
You can find Beltran's picture in the dictionary next to 'fungible'. Too cliché? How about something more topical -- Beltran is to pitching what Adam Smith (D-WA) is to the House of Reps, a decent enough sort whose name reminds you of more famous people.
After a decent Double-A campaign in 2002, Beltran started strong (1.65 ERA, 20/8 K/BB in his first 27 IP), but had some arm trouble (triceps tendinitis) and faltered down the stretch at Triple-A last season, mostly in relief. Beltran, a hard thrower who will turn 24 next summer, could make an impact in the Cubs bullpen as long as his arm is completely healthy.
Beltran, 22, pitched well in relief at Double-A last season, allowing just 28 hits in 41 2/3 innings for 2.59 ERA and earning a brief call up to the Cubs last summer, where gave up 10 earned runs in just 12 innings. A big, hard thrower, Beltran still needs to refine his command – he had a good, but not great 43/19 K/BB ratio in Double-A – before he's ready to produce at the big league level.
