Contrary to a previous report, Rheinecker (shoulder) has not been released by the Rangers. He has been outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma.
ANALYSIS
The transactions log on MLB's official web site made the error. Rheinecker could shuffle between Triple-A and the majors next season as a lefty specialist.

It only took Texas seven starts last year to figure out Rheinecker stinks, as he the Rangers finally decided to move him to the bullpen in late August. His numbers against lefties (18.1 innings, 16 hits, five walks, 21 K) show some promise as a lefty-specialist role. It'll pay the bills, but that's about it.
Like John Koronka, Rheinecker's inability to miss bats in the majors caught up with him quickly. Sandwiched amongst a few trips to the minors are 21 forgettable games with Texas: 28 K and 19 walks in 70.2 innings, allowing 104 hits. Yikes.
Limited to just seven starts due to a torn finger tendon on his pitching hand, Rheinecker is expected to begin the year at Triple-A Sacramento. He'll need a trade of Barry Zito (with no pitching coming back in return) and a really good spring or a change of scenery to crack a major league rotation in 2006.
Rheinecker's numbers, outside of hits allowed, weren't terrible at Triple-A Sacramento, but a lot would have to go wrong in Oakland for him to get more than a start or two. He's always yielded quite a few hits despite a pretty decent K/9IP rate, so that remains a concern.
Rheinecker's early season control woes at Double-A were straightened out, enough to get him promoted to Triple-A Sacramento for six starts. He figures to be behind Justin Duchscherer and Mike Wood for the fifth starters' spot out of spring training, and Joe Blanton is charging hard right behind him.
