ANALYSIS
"It wasn't a huge shock," Abercrombie said. "I just came in and had a good spring. I just have to take it down to [Triple-A] Round Rock and hopefully come back quickly. You can't control what goes on, you can't control what they [decide]." If anything happens to one of the Astros current five outfielders, Abercrombie will be one of the first options recalled from Triple-A, but he'd likely fill a reserve role with limited opportunities even in that scenario.

Abercrombie saw very limited action last year, hitting .309 in just 55 at-bats. He does have a bit of pop, as he has nine homers in 180 career at-bats, so he'll likely find work as an occasional starter and defensive replacement after he was non-tendered by the Astros.
He put up some gaudy numbers at Triple-A, but Abercrombie flopped in two auditions with the Marlins thanks to nearly non-existent plate discipline. Waived and picked up by the Astros, he'll continue to try and find enough skills to convert his considerable tools into major league production.
Abercrombie got a chance to establish himself as the Marlins center fielder, or at least a major leaguer, and failed on both fronts. His plate discipline was predictably poor, leaving him unable to take advantage of his power or speed. He might return as a bench player, as his defense was solid, but Florida won't ask him to be a lineup regular again.
Abercrombie has a great set of tools, posting a 25-25 season last year between High-A and Double-A, but hasn't yet given indication he'd be able to match that production at higher levels. He'll turn 26 this year, so the clock isn't just ticking for Abercrombie, it's ringing.
Abercrombie came to Arizona from the Dodgers as part of the Steve Finley deal. Man, he strikes out a lot. He probably gets no farther than Triple-A in 2005, and maybe forever.
On the surface, Abercrombie had a decent year at Double-A in 2003, with 15 home runs and 28 steals, but once again he was a strikeout machine with 164 K's in 116 games. He also only managed 16 walks. To say he needs to work on his plate discipline is an understatement.
Did everything quickly at Vero Beach including steal bases and strike out at a massive clip of 30% of his at bats. At 21, there's plenty of time to harness the obvious skill.
