The White Sox reassigned Aquino to Triple-A Charlotte Tuesday, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
He lost out on the final bullpen spot to Sergio Santos. Aquino could not have done much more to argue his case; he did not allow a run in 10.1 innings, and he posted a 7:3 K:BB. He should report to Triple-A Charlotte.

Aquino split time between Milwaukee and Triple-A Nashville in 2007. Although he pitched well at Triple-A, he struggled during his time in Milwaukee and was deemed expandable over the winter, getting claimed off waivers by Baltimore. The Orioles are thin in the bullpen and think that Aquino can help them out in middle relief. There is an outside chance that he could get a crack at the closer's role with Chris Ray and Danys Baez expected to miss all of 2008, but he's a long shot to win the job and hold it for a significant period of time.
Aquino actually pitched better last year than he did during his 16-save season in 2004. Aquino projects more as a set-up guy than a closer, and now that he's in Milwaukee, his window to close is even tighter.
Aquino never really got untracked after starting the season two months late due to elbow problems. He was the co-closer for a couple of weeks in midsummer, but couldn't hold onto the job. There's no guarantee he'll win a roster spot this spring, and even if he does, he'll be far down in the bullpen pecking order.
Aquino had about as good a season as you can hope for when you're the closer for a team that went 51-111, converting 16 of 19 save chances while posting a 1.16 WHIP. He doesn't have a lights-out strikeout rate, however, with just 6.6 K/9IP, so Jose Valverde, who had a great 2003 season before missing most of 2004 due to injury, will probably reclaim the closer role in spring training if he's healthy. That would move Aquino to a set-up role.
The young righty had a decent season in the hitting-happy Double-A Texas League in 2003, going 7-3, 3.46 in 20 starts with a 1.43 WHIP and a 91-to-38 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 107 innings (with only five home runs allowed). Aquino will probably start 2004 at Triple-A in the Arizona system, and may still be one more season away from the bigs.
Will probably spend the 2003 season at Double-A El Paso for the Diamondbacks.
