Sweeney was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks in November. He'll try to earn a bullpen spot in spring training assuming that the D-Backs don't jettison him from their 40-man roster before then. At age 36, there's not much to get excited about here, and it's unlikely that he'll land in a high-leverage role.
Sweeney got off to a great start in 2006 as a middle reliever for the Padres, but then spent a month in Triple-A back as a starter. He has started for most of his career, and could win a rotation spot during spring training. The competition will be crowded, however, and he doesn’t strike out many. At the very least, he’s a good bet to make the Padres' roster as a long reliever.
Sweeney probably won't get a chance to pitch for the Padres in 2006 unless someone gets injured, and even then it isn't a sure thing. Every player needs to find his level, and for Sweeney, he may have found his at Triple-A.
Acquired by the Padres in the Jeff Cirillo-Kevin Jarvis deal, the 30-year-old had a decent year at Triple-A Portland, but had a rough go in small major league sampling.
Sweeney could land in the Mariners bullpen this spring. He'll battle J.J. Putz and Aaron Looper if a spot opens. Whoever has the better spring training could get the nod.
