Padilla, who had a solid 2005 campaign, was first injured during the 2006 World Baseball Classic and subsequently had surgery in March. He then re-injured his elbow during spring training in 2007, requiring a second surgery. He was throwing off a mound in November and won't be restricted during spring training, where he will compete for a role in the Mets' bullpen.
Padilla had a solid season for the Mets in 2005, playing a key role in the bullpen, but experienced pain in his right elbow during the WBC that forced him to have Tommy John surgery. He is expected to be ready for spring training, and if he pitches well, could reprise his 2005 role.
Padilla parlayed sterling numbers at Triple-A Norfolk into a bullpen job with the Mets last year. He doesn't throw hard, topping out around 90 mph, but is always around the plate and uses the defense behind him. A case in point: Padilla had a poor 17/13 K/BB ratio for the Mets, after a 59/9 ratio in the minors, but still managed a 1.018 WHIP. He should earn a spot in the team's bullpen in 2006.
