Leg
March 15, 2009
Stockman (leg) was given his unconditional release by the Braves, the team's official web site reports.
ANALYSIS
Stockman has had pain in his oft-injured left leg and feels he'll need surgery. His career is in doubt at this point, which is too bad since he had the potential to be a sleeper given his strong minor league strikeout rates.

Stockman couldn't seem to buy a break and stay in the majors despite strong numbers: no earned runs allowed in 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts for Atlanta; and a 2.10 ERA and 26:18 K:BB ratio in 30 innings in Triple-A. While his walks were a tad high, he continued to have strong strikeout totals before his season ended in July due to a hamstring injury. Stockman had his previous two seasons cut short due to hamstring problems and had 2007 offseason surgery on his left hamstring, so his status for 2009 is in doubt. If healthy, he'll likely start the season at Triple-A, but his strikeout totals show he can be productive in a major league bullpen.
Stockman could contend for a bullpen job with the Braves this season but needs to show he's healthy after hamstring issues the past two seasons. Stockman had an impressive debut with the Braves in 2006, but his season ended early due to a hamstring injury. He missed much of 2007 after a setback to the injury, but continued to post strong strikeout rates and control when healthy. He had a 41:14 K:BB ratio in 36 innings between three minor league levels last season. He could be sleeper if given a chance with Atlanta, but likely needs to prove himself at Triple-A again first.
Stockman will try to win a job in the Atlanta bullpen after reviving his career in the minors last season before a season-ending hamstring injury. He posted strong control numbers in the minors (51:12 K:BB ratio between Triple-A and Double-A) before his promotion, but made just four appearences in the majors before the injury. He struggled in his two prior seasons at Triple-A, so last year's numbers might have been a fluke. But given his success last year, he merits attention this spring if he wins a big league job.
Stockman is the best Australian pitcher in Arizona's organization. He looks like a Quadruple-A pitcher, though, so a lot of things would have to go right for him to see any time in the bigs this season.
Stockman was added to the D-Backs' 40-man roster as a result of a strong campaign at Double-A El Paso. The 6-foot-7 Australian will go to Triple-A Tucson in 2004, but with a lot of young pitching ahead of him, he likely won't see the bigs until at least 2005.
