Hampson was earmarked for a spot on the Padres' Opening Day staff, but his season was delayed until early June as he battled shoulder tendinitis. He split time with the big club and Triple-A Portland for the rest of the season. While with the Padres, he was used exclusively out of the bullpen and turned in a very good ERA of 2.93, but a closer look reveals this was largely the result of allowing only a single homer in 30.2 innings, despite being a flyball pitcher. While he has a place on a major league roster, Hampson has little if any fantasy value, even in the deepest of leagues.
Hampson can start or come out of the bullpen; he was used exclusively as a long reliever last year and he will probably reprise that role in 2008. Hampson is an unspectacular 27-year-old finesse pitcher with decent control. He recorded a 34:16 K:BB ratio in 53.1 innings for the Padres in 2007.
Hampson is a hard-throwing lefty at a crossroads between the bullpen and the starting rotation. He pitched well for the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate (8-4, 3.33 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 7.03 K/9) in 31 games (13 starts). He wasn't as successful in a September cup of coffee with the Rockies, posting a 7.50 ERA in five games, including one start. Traded to San Diego during the offseason, he is most likely to pitch out of the bullpen for the Padres, and stands a good chance of beginning 2007 in Triple-A.
Hampson was impressive in his high Single-A debut at Visalia. The former 28th rounder appears to be on his way to becoming a factor in the Rockies plans, but that's probably still a few years away.
