Townsend, the Rays' top choice in the 2005 draft, missed the entire 2006 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. While those 2007 numbers are not good for a first-round choice, the Rays are just happy Townsend was healthy for most of the season, and his shutdown in August (sore elbow) was very much a precautionary move. Townsend, the Devil Rays' top choice in the 2005 draft, will miss the entire 2006 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October. See you next year, folks.
A strong build and a hard fastball with excellent command are his strengths in combination with a deadly curve that lacks consistency at times. A change up and splitter will need to be refined, but the Rice U. product could be a rotation horse if that’s accomplished.
