Boggs will look to impress at Triple-A with the hopes of a possible midseason recall to Pittsburgh. The switch-hitting outfielder has played in just 29 big league games since 2008, when he hit .226 in 283 at-bats for Texas. Mostly likely, Boggs could fill in as an injury replacement for a week or so, but it would be unwise to expect much more from the 29 year-old.
Boggs spent the entire season at Triple-A Oklahoma City where he posted a respectable .406 OBP aided by 72 walks in 362 at-bats. It was his best season in the minors since 2007, and was enough to warrant at least an invitation to spring training with the Brewers after Texas cut him loose following the season. He strikes out too often and doesn't offer enough power to be anything more than a reserve player in the majors.
Boggs spent most of the year at Triple-A Oklahoma City after racking up nearly 300 at-bats with Texas in 2008. Boggs fanned 98 times in 332 at-bats in the minors, though he did manage 59 walks. The strikeouts continue to be a problem, and his .398 slugging at Triple-A doesn't paint a good picture for the future. He projects as nothing more than a fifth outfielder in the majors at best.
Boggs struggled and was ultimately exposed in the majors, fanning 93 times and hitting just .226/.333/.399 in 283 at-bats. His winter ball numbers (.175/.287/.288, 33 strikeouts in 80 at-bats down in Mexico) weren't much better, and there's little to suggest that he'll be able to contribute in 2009 even if given the at-bats.
Boggs hit well at Double-A Frisco (.266/.385/.508, 19 homers, 70 walks) but still hasn't progressed as quickly as the Rangers had hoped after being selected in the fourth round of the 2004 draft out of Georgia Tech. His numbers in the Mexican Winter League (.284/.360/.352) weren't good, and he'll need to hit the ground running at Triple-A Oklahoma City if he wants to be anything more than a reserve outfielder with occasional power in the majors.
A 23-year-old out of a good college program (Georgia Tech in 2004) should handle High-A pitching better than Boggs' .261/.352/.444 line. There's some hope (40 walks in 284 at-bats), but there's nothing more than a reserve outfielder here if things go his way.
