Beam proved to be one of the last men standing in the Pirates' bullpen by the end of the season, which was no small feat for the unheralded reliever. A bean pole body at 6-foot-7, 210 pounds, Beam toiled mostly in the minors before appearing in 12 contests for the Bucs in September. Despite possessing quite ordinary stuff, the right-hander showed little fear in attacking opponents -- a welcome sight on the Pittsburgh pitching staff. Even so, his 24:20 K:BB ratio fails to portend much promise, making Beam nothing more than an innings eater for the Pirates.
Beam spent the entire 2007 campaign at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization, posting a 45:10 K:BB ratio in 47.2 innings there. He wasn't tendered a contract by the Yankees in December, enabling him to sign as a free agent with the Pirates. Given that he's 27, Beam's no longer a prospect, but he should get a chance to stick in the Pirates bullpen in a middle-relief role this spring.
Beam made 20 appearances for the Yankees last season, but did little to guarantee himself a place in the 2007 plans. Beam's arsenal includes a fastball and a slider, but his complete reluctance to throw the slider when he is behind in the count allows opposing hitters to sit back and punish his fastball. Don't expect much from the 26-year-old this season, as he appears destined to fill a set-up role at Triple-A.
At 25, Beam is old for his level, but he looked dominant in the Arizona Fall League, sporting a 20/2 K/BB ratio. If he can continue his success at Double-A in 2006, he could catch on as extra bullpen arm at some point. He's not looked at as a closing candidate, though.
