Matt Smith

Smith had season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in July. Smith showed some promise as a lefty specialist last season, but was ineffective (11BB/1K in four innings) in his brief stint with the Phillies in April. The Phillies received Smith, in 2006, as part of the Bobby Abreu giveaway deal. Smith pitched 12 scoreless innings in three stints with the Yankees and remained effective after joining the Phillies in late August, allowing two runs and striking out 12 in 8 2/3 innings, he is primarily a fastball-slider pitcher. It seems unlikely he'll be ready for the start of 2008.
