Holdzkom was placed on the minor-league DL with an undisclosed injury, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

ANALYSIS
Holdzkom signed with the White Sox and was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day, but the exact nature of the ailment is unclear at this point. The 28-year-old posted a 3.22 ERA at the Triple-A level last season and will serve as organizational depth in the bullpen when healthy.

Last season, Holdzkom vanished from the major league scene as fast as he burst onto it in 2014. After striking out 14 batters in nine relief outings over nine innings, the 6-foot-9 flame thrower once again lost his ability to throw strikes, walking 17 batters in 22.1 Triple-A innings in 2015. To make matters worse, he hit the DL multiple times with shoulder issues. Holdzkom still possesses a high-90s fastball, but it remains to be seen whether he can stay healthy and throw strikes. He’ll battle for a bullpen spot with the Bucs during spring training.

Holdzkom completed an improbable journey from independent ball to the majors in 2014, serving as a useful September callup for the Bucs. The 6-foot-7 right-handed flamethrower uses a mid-90s cut fastball and a palm ball to keep hitters off-balance. He racked up 14 strikeouts with two walks and two runs allowed in a small sample size (9.0 innings). Command issues previously prevented Holdzkom from progressing through the minor leagues and if he struggles again going forward, then it will probably be traced to control difficulties. For now, the former fourth-round pick of the Mets appears to have a role in Pittsburgh's bullpen. Provided he continues to throw strikes, the 27-year-old reliever could see expanded duty in 2015.
